The battle of Tannenberg (August 2730, 1914) opened World War I. ![]() ![]() Two of the modes in Tannenberg aren’t even playable unless you want to play completely with mediocre AI bots. The audience for this game is split with Verdun, its predecessor, and there simply isn’t enough here to make playing it the clear choice. Command either the German 8th Army or the Russian 1st and 2nd Armies in the battle that decided the early course of the Great War on the Eastern Front. That being said, I can’t recommend it for the sheer fact that the player count is far too low. Two Russian armies invaded German East Prussia in August 1914. Our second boxed game, Hermann Luttmann's Steamroller 2nd Edition is a highly playable, tense, operational look at 1914's pivotal Tannenberg campaign. Still, this is a lovingly crafted historical shooter from an infrequently visited era. The uniforms and guns are spot-on, though the animation can bring any sense of immersion to a halt at times. While Verdun excellently captured the brutality of trench warfare from the western front, Tannenberg does the same for the haphazard warfare on the eastern front. I teach about the Great War every year and fancy myself familiar with the topic. One thing that Tannenberg nails is the World War I feel.
